How to Get from Kyoto to Osaka

Japan’s Easiest City Connection

At 75km apart, Kyoto and Osaka are connected by multiple fast and cheap options running throughout the day.

Option 1: JR Special Rapid (Best Value)

Kyoto → Osaka: 28 minutes, ¥560 on IC card. JR Pass covered ✓. Every 15 minutes from Kyoto Station Platform 3/4. Fast, cheap, and covered by JR Pass.

Option 2: Hankyu Railway

Kyoto-Kawaramachi → Osaka-Umeda: 43 min, ¥400. NOT JR Pass covered. Slightly cheaper, starts from central Kyoto rather than Kyoto Station. Better if staying in Gion/Kawaramachi area.

Option 3: Shinkansen (Overkill)

Kyoto → Shin-Osaka: 15 min, ¥1,430. JR Pass covered. Fastest but unnecessarily expensive for this short distance. Only useful if already using JR Pass and heading for Shin-Osaka for onward shinkansen.

Recommendation

Take the JR Special Rapid — perfect balance of speed, cost, and convenience. If starting from Kawaramachi/Gion, take Hankyu to save the trip to Kyoto Station and save ¥160.
