How to Get Around Thailand

Overview

Thailand has excellent transport options at every budget. The country is well-connected — Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes 1 hour by air or 13 hours by overnight train. Bangkok to the islands takes half a day by bus and ferry.

Budget Airlines (Fastest, Often Cheapest for Long Routes)

Air Asia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air connect Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, and other destinations.

Prices: ฿300–1,500 for most domestic routes when booked in advance.

DMK airport (Don Mueang): Low-cost carrier hub, 30km north of central Bangkok.

BKK (Suvarnabhumi): International and some domestic flights.

Booking: Book directly at airline websites for cheapest fares. 1–3 weeks in advance is usually optimal.

Overnight Trains

Thailand’s train network is slower than buses but more comfortable and atmospheric for long routes.

Main tourist routes:

  • Bangkok–Chiang Mai: 13 hours, ฿600–1,500 for sleeper berth
  • Bangkok–Surat Thani (for Koh Samui/Koh Phangan/Koh Tao): 10 hours
  • Bangkok–Nong Khai (for Laos): 11 hours

Classes: 1st class (air-con compartments, ฿1,200–1,800), 2nd class sleeper (air-con berths, ฿700–1,200), 3rd class (seats only, cheap but uncomfortable for overnight).

Book: at12go.asia or Thai Railways website.

Overnight Buses

Cheaper than trains for most routes. VIP buses have reclining seats and blankets.

Main routes:

  • Bangkok–Chiang Mai: 9–10 hours, ฿450–800
  • Bangkok–Phuket: 12 hours, ฿600–1,000
  • Bangkok–Krabi: 12 hours, ฿600–900

Book through guesthouses, travel agencies, or online.

Ferries (Islands)

Essential for reaching Thailand’s islands. Major operators: Lomprayah, Seatran, Raja Ferry.

Routes:

  • Chumphon → Koh Tao: 2 hours, ฿600
  • Koh Tao → Koh Phangan: 1.5 hours, ฿400
  • Koh Phangan → Koh Samui: 30 min, ฿200
  • Krabi → Koh Lanta: 2 hours, ฿400–600 (high season only)

Grab (Ride-hailing App)

Available in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and other cities. Fixed price before you get in — no meter disputes.

Download the app before arriving. Payment by card or cash.

Local Transport

Songthaew (Chiang Mai): Red shared pickup trucks. Destinations announced by driver. ฿30–50 for shared, ฿150–200 for private charter.

Tuk tuk: Three-wheeled open vehicle. Negotiable price. Tourist novelty — usually more expensive than Grab or metered taxi.

Motorbike taxi (motosai): Drivers with orange vests at stands. Fast for short urban distances. ฿30–80.

Pre-booked airport transfers from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport eliminate taxi queue stress and meter disputes. Fixed price, driver meets you at arrivals.
