The Honest Reality
One week in Thailand requires a choice: cover the highlights quickly (Bangkok + islands) or go deeper in one area. Trying to do Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and islands in 7 days means spending a lot of time in transit.
Here are two realistic 7-day options.
—
Option A: Bangkok + Islands (Best for First-Timers)
Day 1–3: Bangkok
- Day 1: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Yaowarat evening
- Day 2: Chatuchak Market (Saturday/Sunday) or Jim Thompson House, rooftop bar
- Day 3: Morning flight to islands
Day 4–7: Koh Samui or Phuket
- 4 full days on the beach: day trip to smaller islands, snorkeling, relax
Best islands for 4 days:
- Koh Tao: Diving certification possible in 4 days
- Koh Samui: Ang Thong day trip + beaches
- Phuket: Phi Phi day trip + multiple beaches
—
Option B: Bangkok + Chiang Mai (Culture Focus)
Day 1–2: Bangkok
- Condensed temple circuit: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun in one day
- Yaowarat evening, market or rooftop day 2
Day 3: Fly to Chiang Mai
Day 4–6: Chiang Mai
- Elephant sanctuary (book in advance)
- Old City temples
- Doi Suthep
- Cooking class
Day 7: Return to Bangkok, evening flight home

What to Skip on a 1-Week Trip
Koh Phangan + Koh Tao + Koh Samui all three: Too much ferry time for one week.
Chiang Rai: Beautiful but adds a full day travel each way from Chiang Mai.
Ayutthaya + Bangkok: Can be done as a day trip but adds pressure.

For a 1-week trip, pre-booking key activities — elephant sanctuary, island day trips, cooking class — is essential. Limited time means no flexibility for sold-out days.
