Depachika: Japan’s Department Store Food Halls

What Is Depachika?

Depachika (デパ地下) — “department store underground” — refers to the food basement floors in every major Japanese department store. Among the world’s greatest food shopping experiences.

What You’ll Find

Prepared foods: Hundreds of individual dishes in bento containers — salads, braised dishes, grilled fish, tempura, wagyu. Buy individual dishes to assemble your own meal.

Confectionery: Extraordinary selection of wagashi (Japanese sweets) and Western-Japanese fusion desserts. Many shops have queues for signature items.
Bread: Japanese bakeries produce some of the world’s best bread — shokupan (milk bread), melon pan, curry pan.
