Bangkok Cost of Living: What a Month Here Actually Costs

Bangkok Cost of Living: What a Month Here Actually Costs

Bangkok is cheap — but not Chiang Mai cheap

Bangkok is significantly more expensive than Chiang Mai or most other Thai cities, but still dramatically cheaper than comparable cities in the West. Whether you’re thinking about a month-long work trip or longer-term relocation, here’s what to expect.

Rent

Studio in Sukhumvit or Silom near BTS: ฿15,000–25,000/month. Older buildings slightly further from stations: ฿10,000–15,000. Modern condo with pool and gym in prime BTS area: ฿20,000–35,000. Bangkok rental apps like DDProperty and Hipflat show real current listings.

Location matters enormously in Bangkok — being 500m from a BTS station vs 2km from one has real quality-of-life implications given the traffic. I’d pay the premium for the BTS proximity every time.

Food

Street food and market eating: ฿300–450/day for three good meals. Mix of Thai and occasional Western: ฿500–700/day. Regular restaurant eating: ฿800–1,200/day. Bangkok’s upscale restaurant scene is excellent but expensive relative to street food.

Transport

Monthly BTS/MRT pass: ฿1,350 (unlimited rides, one line). Grab supplements: ฿3,000–5,000/month if using regularly. No car needed — in fact, no car preferred, given Bangkok’s parking situation.

Monthly totals

Budget but livable: ฿30,000–35,000. Comfortable with some lifestyle spending: ฿45,000–65,000. Comfortable with frequent dining out and activities: ฿70,000–100,000. Bangkok is what you make it — it can absorb almost any amount of money if you let it.
