Bali Surfing Guide: Best Spots for Every Level

Bali Surfing Guide: Best Spots for Every Level

Why Bali for Surfing

Bali is one of the world’s great surf destinations — consistent swell, warm water year-round (27–29°C), a huge range of breaks from gentle beginner waves to world-class barrels, and an established surf infrastructure (lessons, rentals, shapers) that makes it easy to get in the water.

For Beginners

Kuta Beach — the classic Bali beginner spot. Long, slow-rolling waves, wide beach, dozens of surf schools. Best in the dry season (April–October). Surf lessons IDR 150,000–250,000 for 2 hours with board.
Legian Beach — adjacent to Kuta, slightly less crowded, same gentle waves.
Batu Bolong (Canggu) — mellower than Kuta, more relaxed atmosphere, good for progressing beyond total beginner.

For Intermediates

Echo Beach (Canggu) — consistent left and right handers, good power.
Balangan — long left, beautiful setting, medium power. More forgiving reef.
Bingin — short but punchy left, cliff setting. Good for intermediates building confidence on reef breaks.
Medewi (West Bali) — Bali’s longest wave — a point break that runs up to 200 metres on a good day. Uncrowded. Perfect for intermediates.

For Advanced

Uluwatu — Bali’s most famous break. Long left-hander with multiple sections (Temples, Outside Corner, The Cave, Peak). World-class on a good swell.
Padang Padang — Bali’s most notorious barrel. Short, heavy, hollow. For experienced reef surfers only. Entry IDR 20,000.
Impossibles — three sections join at speed, requires commitment and skill.
Nusa Lembongan (Shipwrecks, Lacerations) — excellent breaks away from Bali’s crowds.

Best Surf Season

The dry season (April–October) brings consistent SW swells from the Indian Ocean — the best surf season. July–August has the most consistent swell but also the most surfers. May–June and September–October are excellent with fewer crowds.
