Nusa Lembongan: Bali’s Neighbor That Gets It Right

Nusa Lembongan: Bali’s Neighbor That Gets It Right

The island that feels like Bali used to

Nusa Lembongan is 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur in east Bali — small enough to explore by bicycle or scooter, large enough to have variety, and still genuinely relaxed in a way that Canggu hasn’t been for years. There are no cars on the main island. That alone changes the atmosphere entirely. — book via Kiwi.com for the best deal.

Getting there

Fast boats from Sanur Beach depart throughout the morning (roughly 7am–3pm). Journey time: 25–35 minutes. IDR 200,000–350,000 one way depending on operator. Book through your Bali accommodation or directly at the Sanur Beach pier — Rocky Fast Cruise and Scoot Fast Cruises are reliable operators. The boat ride itself is an experience: crossing the strait with Bali behind you and the smaller islands ahead.

What to do

Snorkeling is excellent around Nusa Lembongan — crystal clear water, healthy coral at several spots around the island. Devil’s Tear is a dramatic cliff on the island’s south coast where waves crash through rock formations at high tide. Dream Beach is genuinely beautiful and much quieter than anything in south Bali. Mangrove tours by canoe through the island’s north coast: IDR 100,000–150,000 and worth a morning.

The Yellow Bridge

A narrow suspension bridge connects Nusa Lembongan to the smaller Nusa Ceningan island — motorbike width, slightly scary, perfectly fine. Nusa Ceningan has Blue Lagoon viewpoint and a lively surf scene at the south coast that’s worth the 20-minute scooter ride.

Staying overnight

Staying one or two nights on Nusa Lembongan transforms it from a day trip into an island holiday. Accommodation runs from IDR 200,000/night guesthouses to $200/night resort villas. The sweet spot is IDR 400,000–700,000 for a clean, comfortable room near the water. Book ahead in peak season (July–August, Christmas).
