Vietnam e-Visa: How to Apply and What to Know

Vietnam e-Visa: How to Apply and What to Know

The simplest major visa in Southeast Asia

Vietnam’s e-visa system is genuinely good — simple application, fast processing, covers most nationalities, and the 90-day multiple-entry allowance is generous. Here’s exactly how it works.

The basics

Vietnam’s e-visa (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) costs $25 USD for a 90-day single or multiple entry visa. Application takes about 20 minutes online. Processing takes 3 working days in most cases, though some nationalities take longer. You pay by card online and receive your visa electronically — print it out and present at immigration.

Who it covers

As of 2025, Vietnam’s e-visa covers citizens of 80+ countries. Most Western nationalities are included. Check the official Vietnam Immigration website for your specific passport — the list has expanded significantly in recent years.

The application

Go to evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn (the official government portal). Create an application, upload a passport photo and your passport bio page. Enter your entry/exit dates and intended port of entry. Pay the $25 fee by Visa/Mastercard. Receive e-visa approval by email typically within 3 working days. Print the e-visa document — you’ll need both a digital and printed copy at most airports.

Important notes

Apply at least one week before travel to allow buffer time. The e-visa specifies your entry points — if you enter by land at a border crossing, make sure you select land entry when applying. Extend your stay before the visa expires if needed — overstaying a Vietnamese visa has real consequences including fines and entry bans.

Alternative: Visa on Arrival

Still available at some Vietnamese airports for specific nationalities, but requires pre-approval letters and is more complicated than the e-visa. Use the e-visa instead unless your nationality specifically requires otherwise.
