Yanaka — survived both the 1923 earthquake and WWII bombing. Wooden houses, tofu shops, temple cemeteries. Almost no tourists. Walk Yanaka Ginza at dusk.
Koenji — Tokyo’s counterculture heartland. Vintage clothing, underground music, artists and musicians who don’t fit corporate Tokyo.
Kagurazaka — former geisha district, now French-Japanese hybrid. Cobblestone alleys, excellent French restaurants, traditional craft shops side by side.
Shimokitazawa — Tokyo’s best vintage shopping, tiny theaters, live music. No major chains.
