Introduction
Okinawa is Japan’s tropical paradise — a chain of subtropical islands at the far southwestern end of the country, closer to Taiwan than to Tokyo. The beaches are genuinely Caribbean-quality, the marine life is spectacular, and Okinawan culture is distinctly different from mainland Japan.

Why Okinawa is Different from Mainland Japan
Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879. It retains:
- Different cuisine: Goya champuru (bitter melon stir fry), Okinawa soba (pork-based), taco rice (American influence from US military presence)
- Different music: Sanshin (three-stringed banjo-like instrument)
- Different culture: More relaxed, more Southeast Asian in feeling
- Different history: Site of the war’s most intense ground battle in 1945

Best Beaches
Emerald Beach (near Nago): Wide, calm, extraordinarily clear water. Near Ocean Expo Park.
Aharen Beach (Tokashiki Island): Ferry from Naha port (1.5 hours). One of Japan’s finest beaches — white sand, turquoise water.
Kondoi Beach (Taketomi Island): Star-shaped sand (hoshi-zuna) unique to this island. Very shallow, calm water.
Furuzamami Beach (Zamami Island): Excellent snorkeling — sea turtles, manta rays.
