Malaysia sits between Thailand/Vietnam prices and Singapore/Japan prices — developed infrastructure and excellent food at genuinely affordable rates. Here is what things actually cost.
Accommodation
Budget guesthouse: RM50-100/night ($11-22). Mid-range hotel: RM150-300/night. Luxury hotel: RM400-800+/night. Penang is slightly cheaper than KL. The Sabah/Sarawak (Borneo) accommodation is generally mid-range with fewer budget options.
Food
Hawker centre or kopitiam meal: RM8-15 ($1.70-3.30). Nasi kandar (Indian-Muslim rice): RM8-15. Mid-range restaurant: RM30-60 per person. Shopping mall food court: RM12-25. Malaysian food is extraordinary value — one of Asia’s great food cultures at very accessible prices.
Transport
KL MRT single journey: RM1.20-5.50. Grab in KL: RM8-25 for most city trips. KTM train KL to Penang: RM60-100. AirAsia domestic flight KL to Langkawi: RM80-200 booked in advance. Penang ferry from Butterworth: RM1.20. Malaysia’s integrated transport in KL is excellent and cheap.

Batu Caves: free entry. KL Bird Park: RM63. Penang hill funicular: RM30. Langkawi Cable Car: RM55. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (Sabah): RM30.
