Visa-free for most — and genuinely simple
Malaysia offers visa-free entry to citizens of most countries for 30-90 days. The entry process at Kuala Lumpur International Airport is efficient and straightforward.
Visa-free entitlements
USA, UK, EU member states, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, most ASEAN: 90 days visa-free. Some nationalities get 30 days. Indian citizens receive 30 days visa-free (a relatively recent policy change that has made Malaysia much more accessible from India). Check the Malaysian Immigration Department website for your specific nationality.
What you need
Valid passport (6+ months validity). Onward or return ticket. Accommodation details. Sufficient funds (RM1,000 per month as a guideline, rarely checked). No advance application required for visa-free nationalities.
Nationalities requiring a visa
Apply for an eVISA at evisa.imi.gov.my or at the Malaysian Embassy in your country. The eVISA system is functional and handles single-entry tourist visas for most applicable nationalities. Processing: 2-5 business days.
Extension
Extend at the Immigration Department in KL or Penang. Limited extensions available. Most visitors find 90 days sufficient — Malaysia is well-sized for thorough exploration in that period.
Practical arrival
KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) has separate immigration lanes for ASEAN and non-ASEAN travelers. The KLIA Ekspres train connects the airport to KL Sentral in 28 minutes (RM55) — the most efficient option. Welcome Pickups for private transfers if you prefer door-to-door service.
