Do You Need Japanese to Travel Japan?
No — Japan’s tourist infrastructure has excellent English support. But even a few Japanese words dramatically improve your experience and are warmly received by locals.
Most Important Phrases
Sumimasen — Excuse me / Sorry (use constantly — to get attention, when passing, when apologizing)

Doko desu ka? — Where is ___?
Ikura desu ka? — How much is it?
Eigo hanasemasu ka? — Do you speak English?
Itadakimasu — said before eating (roughly “I receive this gratefully”)
Gochisosama deshita — said after eating (“that was a feast”)
Restaurant Phrases
___ hitotsu kudasai — One ___ please
Okaikei onegaishimasu — Bill please
Kore wa nan desu ka? — What is this?
Best Learning Apps
Duolingo (free, good for basics), Pimsleur (audio-focused, excellent for pronunciation), LingQ (for intermediate learners). Focus on katakana reading first — most English loan words are written in katakana and once you can read it, menus become much more readable.
Google Translate Camera
Download Japanese pack for offline use. The camera translation (instant overlay on menus and signs) is remarkably good. This plus basic phrases covers most tourist situations.
