Japan Open to Tourists: Current Entry Rules

Japan’s Current Entry Status (2025)

Japan is fully open to tourists from all countries with normal pre-pandemic entry rules in effect. All COVID-related restrictions have been completely removed since 2023.

Who Can Enter Visa-Free

Citizens of 68+ countries can enter Japan visa-free for tourism stays of up to 90 days. Major visa-free countries include: USA (90 days), UK (90 days), Canada (90 days), Australia (90 days), all EU countries (90 days), and many others. Check mofa.go.jp for the complete current list.

Entry Requirements

  • Valid passport (ideally 6+ months validity remaining)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Accommodation details for first night
  • No criminal record (some convictions may result in denial)

Registering a Visit Japan Web Account

Japan now offers Visit Japan Web — an optional online pre-registration system for immigration and customs forms. Using it speeds up arrival significantly (you show a QR code instead of filling paper forms). Recommended but not mandatory.

What No Longer Applies

No vaccination requirements, no COVID test requirements, no Japan Web registration mandate, no tourist caps or booking windows. Japan has returned to simple, standard international tourism entry.
