Is Taiwan Cheap to Visit? The Real Numbers

Is Taiwan Cheap to Visit? The Real Numbers

Cheaper than Japan, more expensive than Southeast Asia — and genuinely great value

Taiwan occupies a sweet spot that doesn’t get enough attention. It’s a highly developed, technologically advanced democracy with first-world infrastructure and food culture that’s among Asia’s best — and it costs roughly half what comparable experiences would cost in Japan.

Food costs

Night market food: NT$50–150 per item ($1.50–5). Lu rou fan (braised pork rice) at a local shop: NT$35–60. Full beef noodle soup at a sit-down restaurant: NT$180–280. The cost of eating well in Taiwan is genuinely excellent for the quality level.

Accommodation

Hostel dorm in Taipei: NT$600–900/night ($19–28). Budget private room: NT$1,200–1,800/night. Mid-range hotel: NT$2,000–4,000/night. Outside Taipei (Hualien, Tainan), prices are meaningfully lower — NT$800–1,500 for a clean private room.

Transport

Taipei MRT single journey: NT$20–65 depending on distance. EasyCard (Taipei’s IC transit card): rechargeable, works on metro, buses, some taxis, and convenience store purchases. High-speed rail Taipei to Tainan: NT$1,080 ($34). Excellent value for the distance and speed.

Daily budget

Budget: NT$1,500–2,000/day ($47–63). Mid-range: NT$2,500–4,000/day. Taiwan is one of Asia’s best-value destinations for a developed country experience.
