Going against the flow
Most people travel this route south to north rather than the classic north-to-south direction. The options are the same either way.
Fly to Da Nang: the obvious answer
1h20min from HCMC to Da Nang, then 30 minutes by Grab to Hoi An. Total: 3 hours door-to-door. VietJet, Bamboo Airways, Vietnam Airlines all fly this route; prices from $25–80 depending on booking time. Flying makes sense here — the road distance is 900km and the scenery between HCMC and Hoi An on the bus isn’t the highlight of Vietnam. Overnight sleeper bus: budget option
HCMC to Hoi An by sleeper bus takes 16–18 hours. Operators include The Sinh Tourist and Phuong Trang. Around 300,000–450,000 VND. Fine if you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind the time. The buses leave evening and arrive mid-morning — you arrive tired but having saved a night’s accommodation cost.
Night train: possible but complicated
HCMC to Da Nang by overnight train is a valid option (16–19 hours, soft sleeper around 600,000 VND) but the logistics of connecting to Hoi An add complexity. The bus option is simpler for this specific route.
What I’d do
Fly. The price difference between the cheapest flight and the bus is often $20–30, and you arrive in Hoi An with energy for the afternoon rather than sleeping it off. On a Vietnam itinerary of 2–3 weeks, that time matters.
