Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: Getting There Without the Stress

Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: Getting There Without the Stress

This journey is more organized than it used to be

Ha Long Bay is 160km from Hanoi — a 3–3.5 hour journey by road. Most cruises include transfers in their packages, but if you’re booking independently or want to understand your options, here’s how it works.

Through your cruise operator (easiest)

Most mid-range and luxury Ha Long Bay cruises include hotel pickup in Hanoi in their package price. You get picked up at your accommodation around 7–8am, transferred by comfortable minivan to the pier (3–3.5 hours), and board your boat. This is what I’d recommend for most travelers — the transfer is included, it’s reliable, and it gets you on the water by noon.

Public bus from Hanoi

Buses depart from My Dinh and Giap Bat bus terminals to Ha Long City. Journey: 3.5–4 hours, 120,000–180,000 VND. Then a local taxi or Grab to Tuan Chau pier (20km from Ha Long City, 100,000–150,000 VND). Total: around 5 hours and requires some navigation. Good for budget travelers or those who’ve already booked their cruise and don’t need operator transfers.

Limousine bus (good middle option)

Several companies (Duc Duong, Hai Au) run comfortable minivans from Hanoi’s Old Quarter directly to Ha Long Bay cruise piers, 3.5 hours, around 250,000 VND. Book online or at your guesthouse. More comfortable than public bus, cheaper than cruise operator transfer.

Important: which pier?

Ha Long Bay cruises now depart from Tuan Chau pier, not the old Ha Long City pier. Make sure your transport option actually goes to Tuan Chau — some older recommendations reference the city pier which is no longer used by most cruise operators.
