Bangkok to Phuket: Every Way to Get There

Bangkok to Phuket: Every Way to Get There

The most-traveled tourist route in Thailand

Bangkok to Phuket is about 860km south, and there are genuinely good options at different price points. Here’s what I’ve tried and what I actually recommend.

Flying: the sensible choice for most people

This is a 1h30min flight and the fares can be remarkably cheap. AirAsia, Lion Air, and Nok Air all fly this route — I’ve paid as little as ฿800 booked a few weeks ahead, though ฿1,500–2,500 is more typical. Check Aviasales to compare across carriers. Flying is what I do now unless I’m specifically trying to slow down. — book a Kiwi.com in advance for the best price.

Phuket’s airport is in the north of the island — allow 1 hour to reach the south (Patong, Kata, Karon) by taxi or shared minivan.

Overnight bus: 13–14 hours, ฿600–900

Departs Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal, arrives Phuket Bus Terminal in the early morning. VIP buses are comfortable enough for the price. Good if you’re on a tight budget or want to save a night’s accommodation. The journey is genuinely long though — Phuket is far south.

Train + bus combination

Take the overnight train to Surat Thani (9 hours), then a bus to Phuket (4 hours). This route actually passes through some beautiful southern Thailand scenery. Total time around 13–14 hours but broken into two segments. Not faster than the direct bus but more comfortable for the sleeping portion.

What I’d tell you

If you have a week or more in Phuket, fly — the time saved is worth the extra cost. If you’re doing a longer Thailand trip on a budget, the overnight bus from Bangkok is perfectly fine and the morning arrival into Phuket feels like an adventure, at least the first time.
