Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay: Which One Should You Choose?

Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay: Which One Should You Choose?

The version most people don’t know about

Ha Long Bay is on everyone’s Vietnam list. Lan Ha Bay is something you find out about after arriving in Vietnam or while researching alternatives to the most-visited option. Here’s the honest comparison.

Ha Long Bay: the classic

2,000+ islands and islets, UNESCO listing, the karst scenery that defines northern Vietnam’s coast. Peak season it hosts hundreds of boats simultaneously. The caves (Sung Sot Cave is the main one) are genuinely impressive but feel conveyor-belt at busy times. The accessibility from Hanoi (3.5 hours, easy bus connections) is a real advantage.

Lan Ha Bay: the quieter version

Part of the same geological formation, fewer islands (800+), but noticeably fewer cruise boats. Accessed from Cat Ba Island — which adds complexity (you need to reach Cat Ba first, 2.5 hours from Hai Phong or 4 hours from Hanoi with a ferry) but rewards with a more genuine experience. I’ve done both, and my Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise felt more like actually being in a remote natural wonder than my Ha Long Bay one did.

Cat Ba Island itself

Staying on Cat Ba Island rather than just using it as a transit point is worth considering. The national park in the island’s interior has good hiking; the beaches on the south coast are excellent in the dry season. The town has a backpacker street but also enough of a local fishing community to feel real.

My actual recommendation

If it’s your only chance to see this landscape: Ha Long Bay is fine, do the 2-night cruise on a mid-range boat and you’ll be happy. If you’ve been before or value quieter experiences over logistical ease: Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba is significantly better. The extra planning is worth it.
