Cat Ba Island: Ha Long Bay’s Quieter Alternative

Cat Ba Island: Ha Long Bay’s Quieter Alternative

More island, less cruise ship

Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay archipelago — 354 square kilometers of national park, limestone karst, fishing villages, and actual beaches. Most Ha Long Bay tourists see it from the water or as a transfer point. Staying on Cat Ba itself gives you something different: the bay from a base on land, plus the island’s own considerable character.

Getting to Cat Ba

The standard route from Hanoi: bus from Luong Yen terminal to Hai Phong (2.5 hours, 100,000 VND), then ferry from Hai Phong to Cat Ba Town (45 minutes, 120,000 VND). Total: roughly 4–5 hours. Or a speedboat from Ha Long City directly to Cat Ba (1.5 hours, 200,000–300,000 VND). Cat Ba Express runs a well-organized Hanoi–Cat Ba package transfer.

What’s actually on the island

Cat Ba National Park covers half the island with good jungle hiking trails — the trek to the peak (Ngu Lam, 3–4 hours round trip) has excellent views over the bay and archipelago. Hospital Cave, a wartime Viet Cong facility built into a limestone hill, is a fascinating underground complex (40,000 VND). Cat Co beaches (1, 2, and 3) are pleasant swimming beaches a short walk from Cat Ba town.

Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba

The main reason most travelers come: Lan Ha Bay’s limestone karst scenery with significantly fewer tourist boats than Ha Long Bay proper. Day trips and overnight cruises depart from Cat Ba Town — a one-day kayaking tour through the bay is the ideal way to experience it, around $25–40 per person through operators in town. The afternoon light in Lan Ha Bay is extraordinary.
