Bali’s Best Budget Accommodation: Hostels and Guesthouses That Work

Bali has genuinely good hostels now

Five years ago, Bali’s budget accommodation was mostly uninspiring homestays and dusty guesthouses. The hostel culture has improved dramatically — Canggu especially has social hostels with pools that match the quality of Southeast Asia’s best.

Canggu: the budget base for young travelers

Dingo Dingo Hostel near Batu Bolong Beach: consistently rated one of Bali’s best. Pool, social vibe, decent cafe, dorms from IDR 150,000–200,000/night. Selina Canggu is more upscale hostel territory — coliving-meets-hostel with excellent WiFi and coworking space, dorms from IDR 250,000. These are genuinely good places to be based in Bali’s social hub.

Ubud: different energy, different options

Ubud’s hostel scene is smaller and calmer than Canggu’s. Pondok Pundi Village Inn is an excellent value guesthouse (not exactly a hostel but budget territory) near the Monkey Forest — private rooms from IDR 200,000–350,000, clean, friendly, good breakfast included. The Ubud Terrace is more social and has met expectations for the price.

What budget looks like in South Bali

Kuta and Legian still have the cheapest beds on the island — IDR 100,000–180,000 for a hostel dorm in the thick of the tourist zone. Seminyak has fewer genuine budget options and the neighborhood doesn’t lend itself to budget travel anyway.

The honest take

Bali’s budget accommodation sweet spot is around IDR 200,000–350,000/night ($12–22) for a private room in a guesthouse with basic amenities and breakfast included. This tier exists throughout the island and is perfectly comfortable. Going below IDR 150,000/night means accepting shared facilities and variable cleanliness.
