Bangkok Neighborhoods: Where to Actually Stay

Bangkok Neighborhoods: Where to Actually Stay

This decision matters more than most

Bangkok is enormous — roughly the size of Los Angeles, with a transit system that doesn’t cover all of it. Where you stay determines what kind of trip you have. I’ve stayed in most of the main areas over multiple visits, and here’s my genuine take.

Sukhumvit: the practical choice

The BTS Skytrain runs through Sukhumvit, making it the most convenient base for getting around. Tons of accommodation at every price point, international food, malls, and easy access to the rest of the city. It’s not particularly Thai-feeling — more like an international business district — but it works. Lower Sukhumvit (Nana to Asok area) is convenient but has a heavy nightlife scene. Upper Sukhumvit (Thong Lo, Ekkamai, Phra Khanong) is where actual Bangkok residents live and eat — my preference for a more local feel.

Silom / Sathorn: my personal pick

Business district by day, surprisingly good food and bar scene by night. Lumphini Park is walkable for morning runs. Less backpacker energy than Sukhumvit. Patpong night market and the BTS/MRT interchange at Sala Daeng make it genuinely convenient. I consistently stay around Silom when I’m in Bangkok and it’s my honest recommendation for first-timers who don’t want a party-focused base.

Old Town / Rattanakosin

Closest to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the river. Charming but limited on accommodation options and not well-connected to the BTS. Good for one or two nights if you want to explore the historic center on foot — not great as a long-term base.

Khao San Road area

Budget hostels, backpacker energy, cheap beer. Fine for a night, exhausting for a week. The accommodation quality for the price is actually worse than what you get in Sukhumvit or Silom these days.

The thing I’d tell a friend

Spend ฿300–500 more per night to be near a BTS or MRT station. Bangkok traffic is genuinely terrible and taxis in traffic are both expensive and soul-destroying. Station proximity is worth every baht.
