Bali Travel Tips for First-Timers

Bali Travel Tips for First-Timers

Your First Time in Bali

Bali is one of Asia’s most visited destinations — lush rice terraces, ancient temples, surf beaches, and a thriving food scene. Here’s what every first-timer needs to know.

Visa

Most countries get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Ngurah Rai Airport — IDR 500,000 (~$30 USD) for 30 days, extendable to 60 days. Or apply for an e-VOA online before departure to skip the airport queue.

Transport

Scooter rental: IDR 60,000–100,000/day — best if you have riding experience.
Private driver: IDR 400,000–600,000 full day — recommended for day trips and first-timers.
Grab/Gojek: Works in south Bali, transparent pricing. — book via Localrent for the best deal.

Money

Currency: Rupiah (IDR), ~15,000–16,000 per USD. Carry cash for warungs and temples. BCA ATMs give best rates. Avoid airport exchange desks.

Culture Tips

  • Wear sarong + sash at temples (available to rent IDR 10,000)
  • Don’t touch offerings on the ground
  • Remove shoes entering temples and some guesthouses
  • Dress modestly in villages (shoulders and knees covered)

Scams to Avoid

  • Always use Grab/Gojek or agree price before non-metered taxis
  • Use authorized money changers only (Central Kuta is reliable)
  • Unofficial touts charging fake temple entry fees
