Thailand e-Visa: How the Online Application Works

The Thai e-visa system: finally usable

Thailand launched a proper e-visa system (evisa.thaigov.go.th) that handles tourist visa applications online. For nationalities that need a visa rather than getting the visa exemption on arrival, this is a significant improvement over the old process of visiting a consulate.

Do you actually need to apply?

Before starting any visa application: check whether your nationality qualifies for the 60-day visa exemption on arrival. Most Western passports do. If you do, you don’t need to apply for anything — just arrive with your passport, return ticket, and reasonable proof of funds.

The e-visa is for people who either: need a visa because their nationality isn’t exempt, want a pre-approved tourist visa for certainty, or need a different visa category (education, business, retirement).

How the e-visa application works

Go to evisa.thaigov.go.th. Create an account, complete the application form, upload your passport bio page, a recent photo, your flight itinerary, and accommodation bookings. Pay the fee online (varies by visa type and nationality, roughly $30–50 USD equivalent). Processing takes 3–5 working days. You receive your e-visa by email — print it and present it at immigration.

What I’d check first

The Thai e-visa system has improved but still has occasional technical issues. If applying close to your travel date, have a backup plan — some nationalities can get visas on arrival at major airports (different from visa exemption — there’s a fee and a queue). Apply at least 2 weeks before departure.
