Thai Massage Guide

Types of Thai Massage

Traditional Thai Massage (Nuad Phaen Boran)

No oil. The therapist uses their hands, knees, legs, and feet to compress and stretch the body through a series of yoga-like positions. Feels like assisted yoga. Can be intense — communicate if pressure is too much.

Best for: Those who want a full-body stretching and pressure experience. Not a relaxation massage.

Duration: 1–2 hours. Price: ฿250–500 in tourist areas, ฿150–300 at local shops.

Oil Massage (Thai Aromatherapy)

Combines Swedish massage technique with Thai herbs and oil. Relaxing rather than intense.

Best for: Relaxation. Popular at resorts and upscale spas.

Price: ฿400–800 in tourist areas, ฿800–2,000 at resort spas.

Foot Massage (Nuad Thao)

Focus on the feet and lower legs. Reflexology-based. Wonderful after a day of walking temples.

Best for: End of a long day. Easily found everywhere.

Duration: 30–60 minutes. Price: ฿150–300.

Herbal Compress Massage

Hot compress bags filled with herbs (lemongrass, ginger, turmeric) applied to muscles. Aromatic and deeply relaxing.

Price: ฿600–1,500.

Finding Quality Massages

Wat Pho School (Bangkok): The gold standard traditional Thai massage. The school attached to Wat Pho has been teaching since 1962. Therapists are certified here. ฿420 for 1-hour traditional massage.

Look for: Clean facilities, robes provided, professional demeanor, proper training certificates displayed.

Avoid: Street-level shops with extremely low prices (฿99–150) — often undertaken by untrained staff. You get what you pay for with bodies.

Resort spas: Significantly more expensive but consistently high quality. ฿1,500–4,000+ for full treatments.

Tips

First time: Start with a foot massage (easier to handle) or 1-hour traditional (less intense than 2 hours).

Communicate: Thai massage therapists expect you to speak up. “Bow bow” (gentle) means lighter. “Nuat nak” means harder.

Shower first: Standard courtesy. Some spas provide shower facilities.

Tip: ฿50–100 tip is appreciated but not mandatory for street-level shops. ฿150–200 at mid-range spas.
