I crashed in Pai on day two
Not badly — low speed, gravel corner, more embarrassment than injury. But enough to understand that renting a scooter in Thailand with minimal two-wheeled experience is genuinely risky in ways that the rental shops will absolutely not mention. — book via Kiwi.com for the best deal.
That said: with the right preparation, renting a scooter in Thailand is one of the best ways to experience the country. The freedom it gives you — especially in Chiang Mai, Pai, and the islands — is worth the added complexity.
What to actually know before you ride
Thailand drives on the left. Most scooters are automatic (twist and go), which is easier than geared bikes. But the road conditions vary wildly — perfectly paved highways, sudden gravel stretches, unexpected potholes, dogs running into the road at 7am. Experienced cyclists handle all this fine. People who’ve never ridden a motorbike shouldn’t start on their first day in Thailand.
The practical stuff
Rental cost: ฿200–350/day for a 100–125cc automatic scooter. Always inspect the bike thoroughly before taking it and photograph any existing damage — scooter return scams (being charged for pre-existing damage) do happen. Your passport is usually held as deposit; try to pay a cash deposit instead if the shop allows it.
International driving license: technically required, rarely checked, not something you should skip if you have one.
Best places to ride
Chiang Mai surrounds (Mae Sa Valley, Doi Suthep, mountain villages north of the city) are beautiful on a scooter. Koh Lanta and Koh Phangan islands are very easy — low traffic, flat-ish roads, manageable distances. Pai’s mountain road is for experienced riders only.
Helmet: non-negotiable
Always wear a helmet. Thailand’s road fatality rate is one of the highest in the world — largely motorbike-related. The rental shop will give you a helmet. Wear it even on slow island roads.
