Lovina: Bali’s Quiet North

Lovina is a string of small villages on Bali’s north coast — black sand beaches, calm water, a slower pace, and the famous dolphin watching at sunrise. It’s very different from south Bali and rarely visited by the Seminyak crowd, which is exactly the point.

Dolphin Watching

Lovina is most famous for its early morning dolphin trips. Pre-dawn, traditional outrigger boats head out to watch spinner dolphins that appear regularly in the bay.

How it works: Boats leave 5:30–6:00am. Operators pick you up from your accommodation or meet at the beach.
Cost: IDR 100,000–200,000 per person (negotiate — prices vary)
Duration: About 1.5–2 hours
Reliability: Dolphins are present most mornings but not guaranteed. October–March sees the highest frequency.

Banjar Hot Springs — natural hot spring pools (sulphurous water) in a jungle garden. IDR 30,000. 10 minutes from Lovina.
Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Temple — Bali’s only Buddhist monastery, beautiful terrace views. IDR 30,000.
Gitgit Waterfall — 40-metre waterfall, easy walk. IDR 20,000. 30 minutes from Lovina.
Snorkeling — the calm north coast has decent snorkeling at a few reef spots. Ask your accommodation to arrange a boat.

Getting There

About 2.5 hours from Ubud, 3.5 hours from south Bali. Best by private driver or rented scooter over the mountains. The mountain road passes through beautiful highland scenery. — book via Kiwi.com for the best deal.

Where to Stay

Lovina has plenty of budget guesthouses (IDR 150,000–300,000/night) right on the beach. Most include breakfast. The town is very affordable compared to south Bali.

Is Lovina Worth It?

If you want to see a more authentic, less-touristy Bali — yes. The dolphin watching is a unique experience. As a standalone destination it’s limited, but as part of a larger Bali itinerary including north Bali’s temple circuit and highlands, it’s excellent.
