Apply online, skip the consulate queue
India’s e-visa system (indianvisaonline.gov.in) is now available to citizens of 170+ countries and covers most tourism needs. It’s replaced the need for most visitors to apply in person at an Indian consulate, which was historically a significant friction point.
Tourist e-visa types
e-Tourist Visa (30 days, double entry): for short visits. $25 USD.
e-Tourist Visa (1 year, multiple entry): better value for longer travel. $40 USD.
e-Tourist Visa (5 years, multiple entry): for frequent India visitors. $80 USD.
All allow stays of up to 90 days per visit.
The application
Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in — the official government portal. Upload passport bio page, recent passport photo (white background), and answer the application questions. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days; apply at least 1 week before departure. You receive an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) by email — print it and bring to immigration alongside your passport.
What commonly goes wrong
Photo rejection is the most common issue — the system has strict requirements (specific pixel dimensions, white background, no glasses). Use an online passport photo generator that meets Indian visa specifications. Payment sometimes fails on first attempt — try a different browser or card. If your application is stuck after 5 business days, contact the Indian embassy directly rather than re-applying.
