Hiring a Driver in Bali: The Smarter Way to See the Island

More useful than most tourists realize

Bali’s taxi and ride-share situation is messier than Thailand or Vietnam — Grab coverage is inconsistent, metered taxis are scarce outside resort areas, and the informal driver network of private cars can be excellent or terrible depending on how you find them. Hiring a driver for a full day solves all of this.

A good Bali driver isn’t just transport — they’re a local guide, a translator when needed, a person who knows which restaurant is actually good and which one has a commission arrangement with every driver in the area. Finding a good one changes the trip.

What a full-day driver costs

IDR 400,000–700,000 for 8–10 hours with an air-conditioned car. For the same money in the UK or Australia you’d barely get a taxi to the airport. The driver waits while you explore, drives you between multiple destinations, and is usually available for restaurant or timing recommendations. How to find a good one

The commission problem

Some Bali drivers have arrangements with specific shops, silver galleries, and batik factories where they receive a commission for every tourist they bring. The simple fix: tell your driver upfront that you don’t want to stop at any shops unless you specifically request it. Good drivers respect this immediately.
