Chiang Rai Travel Guide

Introduction

Chiang Rai is Northern Thailand’s second city — more relaxed than Chiang Mai, with several extraordinary temples and the historical Golden Triangle nearby. Most visitors come for the White Temple and Blue Temple, which justify the trip.

White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

Contemporary artist Chalermchai Kositpipat’s life work — a blinding white temple encrusted with mirrored glass that sparkles in sunlight. The approach bridge over a pit of outstretched hands (representing desire), the silver statues, and the interior murals depicting modern references (Batman, Neo from The Matrix, Predator alongside Buddhist imagery) make it unlike any temple in Thailand.

Entry: ฿100. Open daily.

Photography: Exterior unlimited. Interior photography strictly prohibited.

Best time: Early morning for softer light and fewer crowds. Busiest around 10am–2pm.

Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)

Less famous than the White Temple but equally extraordinary — an intensely blue exterior with gold detailing, and an interior dominated by a large white Buddha. More authentic spiritual atmosphere than the White Temple.

Entry: Free.

Baan Dam (Black House)

National artist Thawan Duchanee’s compound of dark buildings filled with animal skulls, pelts, and dark art installations. A counterpoint to the pure white temple. Fascinating and somewhat unsettling.

Entry: ฿80.

Golden Triangle

The point where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak rivers. Historically the center of the opium trade. Boat trips on the Mekong available. Hall of Opium museum provides historical context.

Getting there: 1 hour from Chiang Rai by road.

Getting to Chiang Rai

From Chiang Mai: 3 hours by bus (฿160) or minivan (฿200). Frequent departures from Arcade Bus Terminal.

By air: Chiang Rai Airport (CEI) — flights from Bangkok (1.5 hours, ฿800–2,000).
