Chiang Mai vs Bali: Which Actually Wins for Remote Work?

Chiang Mai vs Bali: Which Actually Wins for Remote Work?

I’ve tried both seriously, not just passed through

Three months in Chiang Mai’s Nimman neighborhood. Two months in Canggu. Both were productive. Both were good. They’re solving for different things, and knowing which one you need requires some self-knowledge.

Where you’ll get more work done: Chiang Mai

I’m sorry Bali, but it’s true. Chiang Mai is simply less distracting. The mountains don’t tempt you to skip the afternoon work session. The nightlife is mild enough that you’re not destroyed on Tuesdays. The cost of living is low enough that you don’t feel the pressure of watching your runway burn. I wrote more and shipped more in Chiang Mai months than Bali months, consistently.

Where you’ll enjoy life more: probably Bali

The sunsets. The rice fields. The ocean. The spiritual dimension if you’re receptive to it. Canggu’s social scene. Bali is genuinely beautiful in a way that makes you want to put the laptop down, which is either a problem or a feature depending on your current relationship with work.

The practical comparison

Internet: equal, both have good coworking. Cost: Chiang Mai wins by ฿10,000–15,000/month equivalent. Community: Bali wins on density and energy. Food: Chiang Mai wins easily. Weather: Bali avoids burning season (Chiang Mai’s March–April problem). Safety: both very safe.

The question to ask yourself

Do you need productivity infrastructure or inspiration infrastructure? Chiang Mai provides the former. Bali provides the latter. Neither is wrong — you need both at different times. I try to do a Chiang Mai stint in the northern cool season (November–February) when it’s perfect working weather, and a Bali stint when I need to remember why I’m working remotely in the first place.
