Best Countries in Asia for Digital Nomads: Where I’d Actually Go

Best Countries in Asia for Digital Nomads: Where I’d Actually Go

The honest ranking based on living there, not just visiting

The “best countries for digital nomads” lists online are usually written by people who spent two weeks somewhere and extrapolated. I’ve actually based myself for extended periods in several Asian countries. Here’s the real assessment.

Thailand (particularly Chiang Mai)

Still the most established nomad base in Asia. Excellent infrastructure, low cost of living, great food, good coworking scene, real community of long-term residents. The extended 60-day visa makes logistics easier than before. Burning season (February–April in Chiang Mai) is the main downside. For first-time Asia nomads: start here.

Bali (particularly Canggu)

The most social and design-conscious nomad scene in Asia. Good coworking, beautiful environment, strong community events. More expensive than Chiang Mai and getting pricier. The Digital Nomad Visa (5 years) is a game-changer if you meet the income requirement ($2,000/month). For people who want community and lifestyle over pure cost efficiency.

Vietnam (Hanoi or HCMC)

Underrated for nomads. Excellent and cheap food, fast improving internet, real city life rather than expat bubble. The 90-day e-visa helps. Less established community than Chiang Mai or Bali but growing. Hanoi is underrated for focused work — less distracting than Canggu.

Japan (Tokyo)

Expensive but extraordinary quality of life. The new Digital Nomad Visa helps. Tokyo’s infrastructure is world-class. Best for nomads who want a genuine city experience with no compromises on quality. Coworking is pricier but excellent.
