Gili Trawangan: The Real Guide, Not the Instagram Version

Gili Trawangan: The Real Guide, Not the Instagram Version

The most developed Gili, honestly assessed

Gili Trawangan’s reputation ranges from “paradise on earth” to “overcrowded party island.” The truth is somewhere in the middle and depends heavily on when you visit, where you stay, and what you want from a beach holiday.

The good

The turtle snorkeling is extraordinary — a breeding area off the east coast’s Turtle Point has resident sea turtles that are essentially guaranteed sightings at almost any time of day. The diving is excellent (several dive schools, good visibility, diverse reef). The sunsets from the west coast are spectacular. The no-motorbike rule means the island is genuinely quiet once you’re away from the strip.

The reality of the strip

The east coast strip (where boats arrive and most accommodation is) has beach bars playing music until 2–3am. This is fine if you’re there for the party; genuinely disruptive if you’re not. The solution: stay on the north or west coast, a 10-minute bicycle ride from the strip, where it’s quiet enough to sleep before midnight.

Food

More expensive than most of Indonesia — a seafood dinner on the beach: IDR 150,000–350,000 per person. But Gili Trawangan’s local warungs in the interior of the island charge IDR 30,000–60,000 for Indonesian meals. The contrast in price for essentially the same geography is a useful reminder to explore beyond the beachfront.
