Bali Has Beaches for Every Type of Traveler

Bali’s beaches range from wide tourist strips to hidden coves accessible only by steep cliff paths. Here’s the best by area.

South Bali: Surf & Scene

Kuta Beach — famous, wide, consistent beginner surf, very touristy. Crowded but with good reason — great waves and long stretch of sand.
Seminyak Beach — wide, good swimming, backdrop of beach clubs. Best for sunset.
Echo Beach (Canggu) — good surf, hip warungs on the cliff, popular with nomads. Less packed than Kuta.
Batu Bolong (Canggu) — mellower surf, more local feel, small temple on the rocks.

Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu): Hidden Coves

Balangan — beautiful, less crowded, white sand, small warungs on the cliff. Free. One of Bali’s best.
Bingin — narrow beach below steep cliffs, excellent surf, great local warungs. Free.
Padang Padang — famous surf beach, small and scenic, entry IDR 20,000. Made famous by “Eat Pray Love.”
Nyang Nyang — 20-minute walk down a cliff, almost always empty, stunning. Free and rewarding for the effort.

East Bali: Black Sand & Diving

Amed — black sand, excellent snorkeling and diving on the house reef, peaceful and authentic.
Candidasa — quiet, good base for east Bali exploration, snorkeling nearby.
Padangbai — ferry hub, also good diving and snorkeling, backpacker scene.

North Bali: Black Sand & Dolphins

Lovina — black sand beaches, famous for dolphin watching at sunrise. Very different from south Bali — genuinely local, few tourists.

Nusa Penida (Day Trip)

Crystal Bay — best swimming beach near Bali. White sand, clear water, coral reef.
Kelingking Beach — the famous T-Rex cliff beach, stunning but steep descent.

Best for Swimming (Calm Water)

West-facing beaches have strong swells — great for surfing, less safe for swimming. For calm water: Nusa Dua (protected lagoon), Sanur (sheltered by reef), Amed (east coast, calmer).
