Tegalalang Rice Terraces (Ubud)

Most famous — steep, dramatically tiered, cafes along the ridge. 10 minutes north of Ubud centre.
Entry: IDR 15,000–30,000. Best time: 7–9am. The Instagram swings cost IDR 100,000–200,000.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces (UNESCO)

Largest authentic terrace landscape — 600 hectares, UNESCO-listed, far fewer tourists than Tegalalang, more genuinely agricultural. Entry IDR 30,000. 45 min from Ubud.

Sidemen Valley

Narrow valley in east Bali below Mount Agung. Rice paddies, small villages, spectacular backdrop. Free to explore. Best for cycling and authentic village atmosphere.

• Best light: 6:30–9am and 4:30–6:30pm
• Greenest terraces: December–March after planting
• Golden harvest colour: September–November
• Include farmers, palm trees, or tools for interesting composition

The Subak System

Bali’s terraces are managed by the subak — a 1,000+ year old democratic water cooperative linked to temple rituals. Understanding this makes the landscape far more meaningful.
