Chinatown: best for budget and atmosphere
Chinatown is the best base for most travelers — well-connected by MRT, excellent hawker food within walking distance, interesting street life, and the widest range of accommodation options from hostels to boutique hotels. The hawker centres here (Maxwell Food Centre, Chinatown Complex Food Centre) are among Singapore’s best. Slightly noisy on weekend evenings. Best for: budget travelers, first-time visitors who want atmosphere.
Marina Bay: most impressive, most expensive
Staying at Marina Bay Sands or one of the surrounding luxury hotels puts you at Singapore’s most spectacular location. The Skypark infinity pool view is the iconic image of the city. Prices reflect the location — SGD $400-1,000+/night for the headline hotels. Worth it for a special occasion; not necessary for a typical trip. Best for: honeymooners, special occasions, expense accounts.
Little India / Kampong Glam: character and food
The area around Bugis and Little India MRT stations has good mid-range hotels, extraordinary food options, and genuine neighborhood character. Less tourist-polished than Marina Bay, more interesting for daily life. Best for: travelers who want something beyond the tourist circuit.
Sentosa Island: resort experience
If you are coming primarily for Universal Studios, beaches, and resort amenities, staying on Sentosa makes logistical sense. Significantly more expensive than equivalent-quality hotels on the main island, and isolated from Singapore’s actual character. Best for: families with children focused on Sentosa attractions.
