What to Do in Hong Kong: 25 Best Experiences

Hong Kong at a Glance

Hong Kong packs more into a small space than almost any city on Earth. Towering skyscrapers back onto forested hiking trails. World-class fine dining sits next to $2 wonton noodle shops. Ancient temples neighbor gleaming shopping malls. Here are the 25 best things to do — for first-timers and return visitors alike.

Top Attractions

1. Victoria Peak

The classic Hong Kong experience. Take the Peak Tram (HKD 88 return) to the top for panoramic views of the city, harbor, and mountains beyond. Go at sunset for the best light, or at night for the glittering skyline. Book tickets in advance to avoid the queue.

2. Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront

The Avenue of Stars along the Kowloon waterfront offers the iconic view of Hong Kong Island’s skyline. Come for the free Symphony of Lights show at 8pm nightly — the world’s largest permanent light and sound show.

3. Temple Street Night Market

Hong Kong’s most famous night market. Packed with street food (grilled seafood, egg waffles, stinky tofu), cheap clothing, electronics, and fortune tellers. Open from around 6pm, best after 9pm.

4. Mong Kok Markets

The densely packed neighborhood of Mong Kok has several markets worth exploring: Ladies’ Market (clothing and accessories), Fa Yuen Street (sneakers), and Flower Market (beautiful and photogenic).

5. Dim Sum Breakfast

Hong Kong is the spiritual home of yum cha — the tradition of drinking tea and eating dim sum. Head to a traditional restaurant early (7–10am) for har gow, siu mai, cheung fun, and egg tarts. Tim Ho Wan (Michelin-starred, budget prices) is excellent.

6. Star Ferry

Take the iconic Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour for just HKD 3–4. One of the world’s great harbor crossings, with spectacular views of both the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon skylines.

7. Big Buddha (Lantau Island)

The 34-meter Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island is one of the world’s largest outdoor bronze buddhas. Take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car (HKD 235 return) for dramatic views. Combine with nearby Po Lin Monastery.

8. Stanley Market

A relaxed market on Hong Kong Island’s south side, popular for souvenirs, artwork, clothing, and seafood restaurants along the beachfront promenade. Good for a half-day trip.

9. Hiking Dragon’s Back

Hong Kong’s most popular hiking trail, rated one of Asia’s best urban hikes. The 8.5km trail takes 2–3 hours and ends at the beautiful Shek O beach. Accessible by bus from Shau Kei Wan MTR.

10. Sham Shui Po

A working-class neighborhood packed with fabric markets, electronics streets, and cheap local eateries. Far from touristy, it shows a different side of Hong Kong. Great for street photography.

Day Trips

11. Macau (Day Trip)

Just 1 hour by ferry (HKD 170–200), Macau offers a fascinating Portuguese-Chinese colonial history, UNESCO-listed historic centre, incredible food (egg tarts, Portuguese custard), and yes — casinos if that’s your thing.

12. Cheung Chau Island

A charming car-free island 35 minutes by ferry from Central. Seafood restaurants, temples, beaches, and the famous Cheung Chau Bun Festival. Much more relaxed than the city.

Food Experiences
