Hong Kong Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Hong Kong Visa: The Short Answer

Most visitors do not need a visa to enter Hong Kong. Citizens of over 170 countries and territories can enter visa-free for periods ranging from 7 days to 180 days. Hong Kong has a separate immigration policy from mainland China — a China visa does not cover Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong visa does not cover mainland China.

Who Gets Visa-Free Entry

90 Days Visa-Free

Citizens of most Western countries including the USA, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and many others receive 90 days visa-free on arrival.

14–30 Days Visa-Free

Citizens of some Asian and African countries receive shorter visa-free periods. Check the Hong Kong Immigration Department website for your specific country.

Visa Required

Citizens of a small number of countries require a visa in advance, including Afghanistan, Cuba, and a few others. Check the official list if you’re unsure.

Entry Requirements

Even with visa-free entry, you’ll need:

  • Valid passport (at least 1 month validity beyond your stay)
  • Onward or return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Sufficient funds for your stay

Hong Kong vs Mainland China Visas

This is a common source of confusion. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) with its own immigration system, completely separate from mainland China:

  • A China tourist visa does not allow entry to Hong Kong (and vice versa)
  • Traveling between Hong Kong and mainland China requires separate entry permissions for both
  • Macau also has its own separate immigration system

Extending Your Stay

You can apply for an extension at the Immigration Department in Wan Chai. Extensions are not automatically granted — you’ll need to show reasons for staying longer. Most tourists don’t need to extend as 90 days is ample for visiting Hong Kong.

Entering from Mainland China

If you’re crossing from mainland China into Hong Kong, you go through border control at one of several crossing points (Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Shenzhen Bay, etc.). The process is straightforward — just present your passport. Your visa-free allowance starts fresh upon entering Hong Kong.

Practical Entry Tips

  • Have your accommodation address written down — immigration sometimes asks
  • The queue at Chek Lap Kok airport immigration can be long — budget 30–60 minutes
  • E-Channel (automated gates) available for many nationalities — much faster
  • Hong Kong does not stamp passports — entry is recorded electronically
