Two Different Coasts
Sri Lanka’s coasts have opposite weather patterns — when the southwest coast (Mirissa, Galle, Unawatuna) is calm and sunny (November–April), the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) may be rough. They flip May–October.
Southwest coast best time: November–April
East coast best time: May–October

Southwest Coast
Unawatuna
3km east of Galle. Curved sandy bay, calm water, excellent for swimming, good snorkeling at Jungle Beach nearby. Most accessible beach from Galle Fort.
Mirissa
Most popular beach on the south coast. Beautiful crescent bay. Whale watching center (December–April). Increasingly developed but still beautiful.
Tangalle
Multiple beaches across a spread-out area. Rekawa turtle watching at night (March–July). Hiriketiya Surf Beach (small cove, beautiful, good for beginners). More remote feel than Mirissa.
Hiriketiya
Horseshoe-shaped bay that has become extremely popular with surfers and digital nomads. Long Beach Sri Lanka energy — cafes, yoga, budget accommodation.

East Coast
Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka’s surf capital. The main break at the Bay is one of Asia’s best. Surf season May–October. Small, relaxed village atmosphere. Also known for lagoon wildlife (elephants, crocodiles) nearby.
Trincomalee
Natural harbor and base for northeast coast beaches. Nilaveli Beach (5km north) and Marble Bay are beautiful. Pigeon Island Marine National Park offshore has excellent snorkeling.
Best time: May–September.

Practical Tips
Water safety: Rip currents are common on Sri Lanka’s beaches. Always check local advice before swimming. Some beaches have no lifeguards.
Sunscreen: Bring from home — sunscreen is expensive in Sri Lanka.
Stray dogs: Present at most beaches. Usually harmless but don’t approach.
