Galle is Sri Lanka’s most charming city — a perfectly preserved Dutch colonial fort on a rocky peninsula.
Galle Fort
Built by the Portuguese (1588), expanded by the Dutch (1663). The fort walls, bastions and street grid remain intact — a living neighborhood of 3,000 people.
Walk the ramparts: 3km with ocean views on three sides. Best at sunset.
Inside the fort: Dutch Reformed Church, Maritime Museum, boutique shops and restaurants. Free.
Nearby Beaches
Unawatuna: 3km from Galle. Curved bay, good swimming. Most accessible.
Mirissa: 35km east. Whale watching December–April. Beautiful beach.
Getting There
By train from Colombo: 2.5 hours. Book 1st class observation car. Scenic coastal route.
Galle heritage tours and Mirissa whale watching are bookable on Klook.
