Introduction
Kathmandu is unlike any other city in Asia — medieval and chaotic, deeply spiritual and increasingly modern, with seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a valley the size of a small county. It’s the base for all Nepal trekking and a remarkable destination in its own right.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Valley
Boudhanath Stupa
One of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas. The mandala-shaped structure with the Buddha’s all-seeing eyes painted on the tower is surrounded by monasteries, prayer flags, and a constant flow of pilgrims.
Walk the kora (circumambulation path) clockwise with the pilgrims at dawn or dusk — one of Kathmandu’s most moving experiences. Free.
Pashupatinath Temple
Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple, on the banks of the Bagmati River. The cremation ghats burn continuously. Sadhus (Hindu holy men) in orange robes sit on the ghats for photographs (tip expected).
Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple. Access the viewing area on the opposite bank. Free for this viewpoint. ₹1,000 for the broader temple complex.
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)
Ancient Buddhist stupa on a hilltop west of the city. 365 steps to the top (or take the road). Views over the Kathmandu Valley. Named for the hundreds of resident monkeys.
Durbar Squares
Three separate royal palace squares in Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur), and Bhaktapur — all UNESCO World Heritage. Medieval temples, palaces, and statues in various states of repair (some damaged in the 2015 earthquake).
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the best preserved. Entry ₹1,500 for foreigners.

Getting Around Kathmandu
Taxis are cheap and widely available. Always negotiate the fare before getting in or insist on the meter. App-based taxis (Tootle, InDrive) available.
Walking is practical in the old city areas (Thamel, Patan). Roads are narrow and congested — walking faster than vehicles at peak times.

Thamel — The Traveler Hub
Kathmandu’s tourist district. Trekking equipment shops, travel agencies, restaurants, and guesthouses concentrated in a labyrinthine neighborhood. Essential for trekking preparation — buy or rent gear here.
