Nepal Visa: How to Get One On Arrival or Online

One of the simplest visa processes in Asia

Nepal offers visa on arrival to citizens of most countries — pay at the airport, fill a form, get your stamp. Simple. The online option (pre-arrival) saves time at the busy Tribhuvan Airport queue.

Visa on arrival

Available at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and certain land border crossings. Costs: 15 days $30, 30 days $50, 90 days $125. Pay in USD, EUR, GBP, or major Asian currencies at the bank counter before immigration. Bring a passport photo (digital kiosk available if you forget).

Online pre-arrival visa

Apply at online.nepalimmigration.gov.np before your trip. Same fees as on arrival. Submit application, pay by card, receive a pre-approval. Present this at the airport — use the faster dedicated lane. Processing: 24-72 hours. Recommended if arriving on a busy international flight when the visa-on-arrival queue can be 45-60 minutes long.

Extension

Extend your Nepal visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara. $3/day for extensions up to 150 days total in a single visa year. The process takes 1-2 hours — bring your passport, a photo, and the extension fee in cash.

Who cannot get visa on arrival

Citizens of India and several other South Asian countries have special arrangements. Chinese citizens have a separate process. A small number of nationalities cannot get visa on arrival — check with the Nepal Embassy in your country if uncertain.
