The e-visa makes it much simpler than it used to be
India’s e-visa system has transformed the visa application process. Most Western nationalities can now apply online without visiting an embassy. Here is what you need to know.
Who needs a visa
Almost everyone needs a visa to enter India. Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan are exempt. Citizens of most other countries require either a traditional visa or the e-visa.
The e-Tourist Visa
Available to citizens of 170+ countries. Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Three duration options: 30 days double entry ($25), 1 year multiple entry ($40), 5 years multiple entry ($80). The 1-year multiple entry is the best value for most travelers — flexibility to come and go without reapplying. Processing: 3-5 business days. You receive an ETA by email — print it and present at immigration with your passport.
Application tips
Photo requirements are strict — white background, specific dimensions, no glasses. Use an online passport photo generator. The passport bio page scan must be clear and complete. Apply at least 1 week before travel. Common rejection reasons: blurry documents, incorrect photo format, incomplete information.
Arrival
The e-visa is only valid at designated airports and seaports — not all land borders. If entering overland from Nepal or other countries, check whether your entry point accepts e-visas. Major international airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) all accept e-visas.
