The classic route — and why it earned that status
The Delhi-Agra-Jaipur circuit has been called the Golden Triangle since the 1980s and it remains India’s most visited tourist circuit for good reason: three cities, three completely different characters, extraordinary historical monuments at every stop, and a manageable scale for first-time visitors.
Delhi: more than a transit city
Most visitors treat Delhi as a starting point rather than a destination. That is a mistake. Old Delhi — the Mughal city within the city — is one of the most intensely atmospheric places I have been anywhere. The lanes around Jama Masjid, the spice market of Khari Baoli, the kebab vendors of Matia Mahal — this is the Delhi that rewards slow walking and curiosity. Allow 2-3 full days minimum.
Agra: the Taj beyond the postcard
Everyone knows the Taj Mahal from photographs. Nobody is prepared for the actual scale of it. The marble detail, the symmetry, the way it seems to glow — it genuinely earns its reputation. Go at sunrise. Stay the night before in Agra rather than doing it as a day trip from Delhi. The Taj at 6am with a small crowd and golden light is worth the logistics of the overnight stay. Agra Fort across the river is often overlooked and is extraordinary.
Jaipur: the living pink city
Jaipur works on multiple levels — the historical (Amber Fort, City Palace), the visual (the Hawa Mahal facade, the pink-painted Brahmin quarter), and the commercial (textiles, jewelry, gems). Budget a full day for Amber Fort alone. The light on the fort walls at 9am is particularly good. Klook has reliable driver and tour options for the Amber Fort visit.
Getting between them
Train between all three cities — faster and more comfortable than driving. Delhi to Agra: Gatimaan Express (2h, India’s fastest train). Agra to Jaipur: several options, 4-5 hours. Book on irctc.co.in or through an agent in India.
