Asia Travel Mistakes

25 Common Asia Travel Mistakes

Planning Mistakes

1. Not checking visa requirements in advance.

Most SE Asian countries are straightforward but Vietnam requires a pre-booked eVisa ($25), Cambodia an eVisa ($30), China a full visa application. Don’t assume visa-free.

2. Trying to see too many countries in too little time.

Asia is enormous. Thailand + Vietnam + Cambodia + Bali in 2 weeks means spending more time at airports than destinations. Pick 2 countries maximum for 2 weeks.

3. Not booking accommodation for peak seasons.

Cherry blossom Japan (March–April), Christmas-New Year Bali, July-August everywhere — book 3–6 months ahead or pay double for what’s left.

4. Flying into one city and out of the same city.

Open jaw flights (fly into Bangkok, out of Bali for example) save enormous backtracking time and often cost the same.

5. Ignoring the regional weather difference.

Phuket and Koh Samui have opposite rainy seasons. The Maldives is different from Bali. Vietnam’s three regions have different weather windows. Research your specific destinations.

Money Mistakes

6. Not carrying enough local currency.

Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and many Southeast Asian destinations are heavily cash-based. Always have local currency.

7. Using airport exchange desks.

ATM rates are better. Exchange at 7-Bank ATMs in Japan, airport ATMs on arrival (better than exchange desks at most Asian airports).

8. Not having a backup card.

Cards fail, get blocked by bank security, or aren’t accepted. Carry two cards from different networks.

Safety Mistakes

9. Renting a motorbike without experience.

Motorbike accidents are the most common tourist fatality in Southeast Asia. If you don’t have experience riding, don’t start on Bali’s busy roads.

10. Not getting travel insurance.

Medical evacuation from a remote area in Asia costs $50,000+. This is not optional.

11. Not reading recent reviews for accommodation.

Southeast Asian budget accommodation quality varies enormously and degrades fast. Read reviews from the last 3 months.

Cultural Mistakes

12. Dressing inappropriately at temples.

Temples throughout Asia require covered shoulders and knees. Pack a light scarf or carry a sarong.

13. Touching monks.

In Thailand and throughout Buddhist Asia, monks cannot accept direct contact from women. Don’t touch monks, hand them objects directly, or sit adjacent.

14. Photographing without asking.

Always ask before photographing people, especially at religious sites and in markets.

15. Public displays of affection.

In more conservative countries (Indonesia outside Bali, Malaysia, India), public kissing is frowned upon.

Practical Mistakes

16. Not downloading offline maps.

Google Maps offline mode is essential. Download cities before you need them — data connections aren’t always available.

17. Leaving electronics unattended on beaches.

Beach theft is common at tourist beaches across Asia. Never leave your bag unattended.

18. Not bargaining (but also bargaining too aggressively).

At markets, bargaining is expected and part of the culture. At restaurants with printed menus, it’s not. Be friendly and reasonable — aggressive bargaining damages the interaction.

19. Eating only at tourist restaurants.

The best food in every Asian city is in local restaurants without English menus. Use Google Translate camera function.

20. Booking too rigidly.

Asia is best with flexibility. Pre-book the first night, perhaps the first week. Leave room to extend stays in places you love.

Health Mistakes

21. Not starting vaccinations early enough.

Some vaccines require multiple doses over weeks. Start the process 8 weeks before departure.

22. Drinking tap water.

In all Southeast Asian countries, in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka: never drink tap water. Not even for brushing teeth in some countries.

23. Not using sunscreen.

The tropical sun in Southeast Asia and South Asia is significantly stronger than most travelers are accustomed to.

24. Ignoring mosquito bite prevention.

Dengue fever is transmitted by daytime-biting mosquitoes. DEET repellent, wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk.

25. Underestimating jet lag.

From Europe it’s 6–11 hours time difference. From North America 12–16 hours. Plan a light first day. Don’t schedule important activities immediately on arrival.

One of the most common Asia travel mistakes is arriving without connectivity. Activate an Airalo eSIM before your flight for immediate maps and communication.
