Varanasi Travel Guide

Introduction

Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and Hinduism’s holiest destination. On the banks of the Ganges River, life, death, and the sacred are completely intermingled — cremation pyres burn day and night at the Manikarnika ghat, pilgrims bathe to wash away sins, and the air carries incense, marigold garlands, and the sound of priests chanting.

Varanasi is not an easy place. It is, however, unforgettable.

The Ghats

Varanasi has 84 ghats (stepped riverbanks) along the Ganges. The most important:

Dashashwamedh Ghat: The main ghat. Where the Ganga Aarti ceremony is held every evening at sunset. The gathering of priests performing elaborate lamp rituals with thousands watching is one of India’s most powerful spectacles.

Manikarnika Ghat: The cremation ghat — one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism. Bodies are cremated here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on pyres of sandalwood and mango wood. Photography strictly prohibited. Observe respectfully from a distance or from the river.

Assi Ghat: South end of the ghats. More relaxed. Dawn yoga on the steps.

Dawn Boat Ride

The most essential Varanasi experience. Hire a rowboat before sunrise (6am) and float past the ghats as the city wakes up — pilgrims bathing, priests performing rituals, the morning light turning the river gold.

Cost: ₹300–500 for a 1-hour boat ride. Negotiate before getting in.

Ganga Aarti Ceremony

Every evening at sunset at Dashashwamedh Ghat. 7 priests perform a synchronized choreography with lamps, incense, flowers, and fire to music. Deeply moving. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good position.

Viewing options: From the ghat (crowded, free), from a boat on the river (₹300–500), from designated viewing platforms.

Old City (Vishwanath Lane Area)

The maze of lanes behind the ghats. Silk shops, chai stalls, tiny temples, cows. Can be overwhelming — hire a guide for the first exploration.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple: One of Hinduism’s 12 Jyotirlingas (most sacred Shiva shrines). Narrow lanes, intense atmosphere. ₹300 for foreigners.

Practical Tips

Stomach issues: Varanasi tap water is particularly unsafe. Stick to sealed bottled water. Be cautious about street food.

Dealing with touts: Heavy around ghats. Firm “no thank you” once, then ignore.

Photography: Always ask before photographing people. Never photograph at Manikarnika ghat.

Dress: Modestly throughout — cover shoulders and knees.
