Most visitors need nothing at all
South Korea offers visa-free entry to citizens of 110+ countries. Americans get 90 days, EU citizens get 90 days, British citizens get 6 months, Australians get 90 days, and most other Western passport holders get 30–90 days. This covers the vast majority of tourists — you simply arrive and get stamped.
The K-ETA (electronic travel authorization)
South Korea introduced the K-ETA requirement in 2021 and suspended it for visa-free nationalities from 2023 as a trial. Check the current status before travel — requirements change. When active, it’s a simple online application ($10 USD) completed before departure with a typical 72-hour approval.
Current status: check visa.go.kr for your nationality.
For nationalities that need a visa
The C-3 short-stay visa (up to 90 days for tourism) is the standard tourist visa. Apply at the Korean embassy or consulate in your home country — processing typically takes 5–7 business days. Required documents: passport, application form, photo, accommodation booking, return ticket, bank statement. Fee: around $45 USD.
What impressed me about Korean immigration
Incheon Airport has one of the fastest immigration processes I’ve experienced anywhere. Biometric passports from eligible countries use automated lanes — often through in under 5 minutes. The contrast with some Southeast Asian airports is striking.
