The city that rewards preparation
Singapore is one of the easiest cities in Asia to navigate — well-signed, English-speaking, excellent public transport, safe at all hours. But knowing a few things in advance makes the experience significantly better.
Transport
The MRT (metro) covers the whole city efficiently. Get an EZ-Link card at any MRT station on arrival — it works on MRT, buses, and even some taxis. Single journey fares: $1-2.50 depending on distance. Grab works well in Singapore for anything not served by MRT. Never hail a street taxi for fixed-price tourists.
Food strategy
Eat at hawker centres rather than restaurants for 80% of your meals. The food quality at Singapore’s best hawker centres is extraordinary and prices are $3-8 per dish. Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, Old Airport Road Food Centre are the classics. The Michelin-starred hawker stalls (Hawker Chan, Hill Street Tai Hwa) are worth queuing for.
Heat management
Singapore is consistently 30-34°C with high humidity. This is not optional to manage — plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon, retreat to air conditioning midday. The worst time to visit attractions is 11am-3pm. Every shopping mall has excellent air conditioning — use it strategically.
What costs money vs what is free
Free: Gardens by the Bay outdoor areas and Supertree light show, Marina Bay waterfront walk, Chinatown and Little India neighborhoods, Merlion Park, most beaches. Costs money: Gardens by the Bay conservatories ($20-30), Universal Studios Sentosa ($75+), Marina Bay Sands Skypark ($26). The free attractions are often better than the paid ones.
Connectivity
Changi Airport has excellent free WiFi. Singtel tourist SIM at the airport: SGD $15 for 100GB — extraordinary value. Or Airalo eSIM for Singapore if you prefer not to swap physical SIMs.
