Introduction
Rajasthan is India’s most cinematic state — a landscape of desert forts, painted havelis, turbaned camel drivers, and cities so colorful they’ve been nicknamed for their dominant hues. The “Land of Kings” delivers India at its most visually overwhelming.

The Major Cities
Jaipur — The Pink City
Rajasthan’s capital, painted pink for a royal visit in 1876 and maintained ever since. The old city’s rose-colored buildings are extraordinary.
Must see:
- Amber Fort: 16th-century hilltop fort. Take a jeep (not elephant — ethical concerns) up to the entrance. ₹500 for foreigners.
- Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds): The 953-window facade is one of India’s most photographed buildings. ₹50.
- City Palace: Partially occupied by the royal family, partially museum. ₹500 for foreigners.
- Jantar Mantar: Remarkable 18th-century astronomical observatory. UNESCO World Heritage. ₹200.
Jodhpur — The Blue City
The old city surrounding Mehrangarh Fort is painted brilliant blue (historically for Brahmin homes, now city-wide).
Must see:
- Mehrangarh Fort: India’s most impressive fort, rising 125 meters from the rock. ₹600 for foreigners (includes audio guide).
- Jaswant Thada: White marble memorial with city and fort views. ₹30.
- Clock Tower market: The chaotic market around the old clock tower. Best for textiles and spices.
Jaisalmer — The Golden City
Deep in the Thar Desert. The sandstone fort and old city glow honey-gold at sunset. The most “desert” feeling city in Rajasthan.
Must do:
- Jaisalmer Fort: A living fort — people actually live inside. Walk the ramparts, visit Jain temples within. ₹100.
- Sam Sand Dunes: Overnight camel safari to the dunes. Sleep under stars. ₹1,500–3,000 for overnight.
- Patwon Ki Haveli: Extraordinarily carved merchant mansion. ₹100.
Udaipur — The Lake City
Rajasthan’s most romantic city. Lake Pichola, whitewashed palaces, sunset boat rides.
Must see:
- City Palace: Vast palace complex above Lake Pichola. ₹300.
- Lake Pichola boat ride: Sunset cruise past the Lake Palace Hotel (used in James Bond). ₹400.
- Jagdish Temple: Constantly active Hindu temple in the old city. Free.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan
October–March: Ideal. Cool days (15–25°C), cold nights (especially in the desert). Peak season.
April–June: Brutally hot (40–48°C). Jaisalmer in May is extraordinary but uncomfortable.
July–September: Monsoon. Green landscapes (unusual for Rajasthan), fewer tourists, lower prices.
