Introduction
Goa is India’s smallest state and most visited destination. A former Portuguese colony for 451 years, it retains a distinctly un-Indian character — Catholic churches, Western beach culture, relaxed pace, and seafood that rivals anywhere in Southeast Asia.

North Goa vs South Goa
North Goa: More developed, more nightlife. Calangute, Baga, Anjuna beaches. Famous Wednesday flea market at Anjuna.
South Goa: Quieter, better beaches. Palolem is the most beautiful — perfect crescent bay. Agonda is even more secluded.
Best approach: Stay in South Goa for beach quality, day trip to North Goa for Portuguese churches and markets.
—
Best Beaches
Palolem (South): Crescent-shaped, calm water, perfect swimming. Best beach in Goa.
Agonda (South): Quieter than Palolem, turtles nest here.
Vagator (North): Rocky headland, dramatic sunsets.
Anjuna (North): Wednesday flea market is excellent.
—
Portuguese Heritage
Basilica of Bom Jesus (Old Goa): UNESCO World Heritage. Baroque architecture. Contains body of St. Francis Xavier.
Fontainhas (Panaji): Latin Quarter with colorful Portuguese houses.
—
Best Time
November–February: Perfect weather, all businesses open. Peak season.
June–September: Monsoon. Many beach shacks close. Not for beaches.
